What Must I Do to Be Saved?

The most important question you will ever ask. Discover the clear biblical answer — what God requires for salvation and how to respond to the gospel today.

📖 Key Scriptures

Acts 16:30-31, Romans 10:9-10, Acts 2:38

The Most Important Question

A Philippian jailer, shaken to his core after a miraculous earthquake opened his prison doors, fell before Paul and Silas and asked a question that echoes through history:

"Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" — Acts 16:30

The answer they gave was immediate, clear, and complete: "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved." (Acts 16:31). This topic unpacks what that means.

Understand the Problem: You Are a Sinner

Before you can be saved, you must understand what you are being saved from. The Bible is clear that every human being has sinned — fallen short of God's perfect standard — and that the consequence of sin is death and separation from God (Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23).

This is not merely about the big sins. It is about the fundamental human condition: we were made to know and love God, and instead we have lived for ourselves. Every person, regardless of how moral or religious, stands guilty before God.

Understand the Provision: Jesus Died and Rose for You

God did not leave humanity without hope. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to do what we could not do:

  • Jesus lived the perfect life we could not live
  • He died on the cross, bearing the punishment that our sin deserved
  • He rose from the dead, defeating sin and death, and offering new life to all who trust in Him

This is the gospel — the good news. Not advice on how to improve, but news about what God has done.

Repent and Believe

The response God calls for is twofold: repentance and faith.

Repentance means turning from sin and from trusting in yourself. It is not a promise of sinless perfection — it is a genuine change of direction, away from living for yourself and toward living for God.

Faith means trusting in Jesus Christ and what He accomplished on the cross. Not merely believing facts about Him, but personally placing your confidence in Him for your salvation.

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. — Romans 10:9

What About Baptism?

On the day of Pentecost, Peter said to repent and be baptised (Acts 2:38). Baptism is the outward declaration of an inward reality — the public confession that you belong to Christ. It is an act of obedience and a powerful witness, but salvation itself is received by grace through faith, not through the water of baptism (Ephesians 2:8-9).

The Invitation Is for You

If you have never responded to the gospel, the invitation is open to you right now. There is no special prayer formula required — what God is looking for is a genuine heart that turns from sin and trusts in Christ.

"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Romans 10:13). That word everyone includes you.
