Building a Christ-Centred Home

What does it look like to put Christ at the centre of family life? Discover practical, biblical ways to build a home where God is known, loved, and honoured every day.

📖 Key Scriptures

Psalm 127:1, Deuteronomy 6:6-7, Joshua 24:15

The House Built on Rock

Jesus' parable of the two builders ends one of the greatest sermons ever preached — the Sermon on the Mount. The wise man builds his house on rock; the foolish man builds on sand. When the storm comes, one stands and one falls.

The rock is hearing and doing the words of Jesus. The foundation of the home is the same as the foundation of every other aspect of the Christian life: Christ and His Word.

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain. — Psalm 127:1

No amount of effort, organisation, or good intentions can substitute for Christ at the centre of family life. The home built on anything other than Him will not stand when the storms come — and storms always come.

Family Worship

One of the most important and most neglected practices for building a Christ-centred home is family worship — a regular, intentional gathering of the household to pray, read Scripture, and praise God together. The Puritan tradition practised this as a daily rhythm; many healthy Christian families throughout history have done the same.

It does not need to be long or elaborate. Reading a passage of Scripture, asking questions, praying together as a family — fifteen minutes that orient the home toward God. The impact over years is immeasurable.

Grace at the Table

The shared meal has been central to family and community life throughout human history and throughout Scripture. The table is the place of provision, conversation, and relationship — and it is an opportunity for regular, visible gratitude to God.

Saying grace before meals is not empty religious ritual — it is the training of the whole family in the habit of gratitude: recognising that food comes from God, that every good gift is from Him, and that the family is dependent on His provision.

Prayer Together

Praying together as a family — parents and children — is one of the most powerful things a home can do. When children hear their parents pray, they learn what faith looks like in practice. They discover that prayer is normal, not just for church. They hear their parents's genuine concerns, hopes, and gratitude to God.

The Parents as Models

More than anything else, children learn faith by watching their parents. A faith that is real on Sunday and absent through the week will not convince the next generation. A faith that is integrated into all of life — honest, humble, genuine, and consistent — will leave a mark that no formal instruction can replicate.

The most powerful sermon most children will ever hear is the life of their parents.
