Question

Will God forgive me no matter what I have done?

Answer

Yes — and I want to say that as clearly and as firmly as possible, because this question usually comes from someone carrying a weight of guilt that God wants to lift.

The reach of God's forgiveness is not limited by the size of your sin. It is limited only by one thing — your willingness to come to Him for it. Isaiah 1:18 is one of the most generous invitations in all of Scripture: "Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool." Scarlet. Crimson. The deepest, most permanent stains the ancient world knew. And God says: white as snow.

The Apostle Paul is perhaps the most powerful example in the New Testament. Before his conversion he was not merely a sinner — he was a murderer of Christians. He dragged men and women to prison and oversaw their execution. And yet he writes in 1 Timothy 1:15-16: "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life."

The foremost sinner. Saved. Put on display as an example of how far God's mercy reaches.

The only sin God cannot forgive is the sin of refusing to come to Him for forgiveness. Not because the blood of Christ is insufficient — it is entirely sufficient for any and every sin. But because forgiveness, by its nature, must be received. A gift that is refused does not benefit the one it was offered to.

Whatever you have done — come. 1 John 1:9 is a promise: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." All unrighteousness. That covers everything.
