Question

What is the millennium?

Answer

The millennium is the thousand-year period mentioned in Revelation 20:1-6, during which Satan is bound and the saints reign with Christ. It is one of the most debated topics in eschatology, with three main positions held by serious, Bible-believing Christians.

Revelation 20:1-3 describes an angel binding Satan "for a thousand years" and throwing him into the abyss "so that he might not deceive the nations any longer." Verses 4-6 describe those who had been martyred for their faith reigning with Christ for a thousand years — the "first resurrection."

The three main views:

Premillennialism holds that Christ will return before the millennium and will reign on earth for a literal thousand years. At the end of that period, Satan is released, leads a final rebellion, is defeated, and the final judgment occurs. Historic premillennialism has a long pedigree in the early church. Dispensational premillennialism adds a specific structure: a pre-tribulation rapture, seven-year tribulation, then the millennium.

Amillennialism holds that the millennium is not a future literal period but describes the current church age — the entire span between Christ's first and second coming. Satan was bound at the cross (John 12:31 — "the ruler of this world will be cast out"), and the saints who have died in faith are currently reigning with Christ in heaven. The "first resurrection" is the new birth or the resurrection of the soul at death. Christ returns once at the end of this age for the final judgment and new creation.

Postmillennialism holds that the gospel will progressively transform the world, leading to a golden age of Christian influence before Christ returns. His return follows the millennium rather than initiating it.

I hold amillennialism as most consistent with the overall biblical narrative — Revelation is written in highly symbolic apocalyptic genre, and reading the thousand years as a literal future period forces a specific interpretive framework onto a book that consistently uses numbers symbolically. But I hold this with genuine respect for premillennial brothers and sisters.
