Question

What is the lake of fire in Revelation?

Answer

The lake of fire is the most severe image of final judgment in the entire Bible — and it appears in the climactic chapters of Revelation, where the final destiny of all people and spiritual powers is revealed.

Revelation 19:20 describes the beast and the false prophet being "thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur." Revelation 20:10 adds the devil: "and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever." Revelation 20:14-15 describes the final judgment: death and Hades are thrown into the lake of fire — "the second death" — and "if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire."

The lake of fire is explicitly identified as "the second death" (Revelation 20:14, 21:8). The first death is the physical death all humans experience. The second death is the final, ultimate separation from God — the permanent consequence of a life and eternity outside of Christ.

Is it literal fire? Revelation is written in apocalyptic and symbolic genre, and its images consistently represent realities that exceed the images themselves. Whether the lake of fire is literal burning or a terrifying symbol pointing to an even more terrible reality, the point is not diminished — it represents the most extreme possible condition of judgment, torment, and separation from God, without end.

The combination of the terms used — fire, sulfur, torment, day and night, forever and ever — makes it very difficult to read this as mere annihilation or temporary punishment. The same phrase "forever and ever" (eis tous aiōnas tōn aiōnōn) is used of God's reign (Revelation 11:15) and the worship of God (Revelation 4:9). If God's reign is eternal, the torment of the lake of fire is eternal.

This is the most severe truth in Scripture. It should not be softened. And it should make every Christian urgently committed to the proclamation of the gospel — because the alternative to the lake of fire is the Lamb's book of life, and that alternative is freely offered to everyone who will receive it.
