What does the Bible say about the second coming of Jesus?
Answer
The second coming of Christ is one of the most certain promises in all of Scripture — mentioned more times in the New Testament than any other single future event. It is not a peripheral doctrine; it is the anchor of Christian hope.
The certainty of the return is established by Jesus Himself: "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also." (John 14:3). At the ascension, two angels stood beside the disciples and said: "This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." (Acts 1:11). The same Jesus. The same bodily, personal return.
What will the second coming involve? The New Testament gives a consistent picture across multiple passages:
The return will be visible, physical, and unmissable. Matthew 24:27: "For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man." This is not a spiritual or invisible event. Every eye will see Him (Revelation 1:7).
The dead will be raised. 1 Corinthians 15:22-23: "For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ."
Judgment will take place. Matthew 25:31-46 describes the Son of Man coming in glory and separating the nations as a shepherd separates sheep from goats — the righteous to eternal life, the cursed to eternal punishment.
The creation will be renewed. 2 Peter 3:10-13 describes the present heavens and earth giving way to "new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells." Revelation 21 fills this out: the new Jerusalem coming down, God dwelling with His people, all things made new.
The appropriate response to the certain return of Christ is not speculation about the timeline — it is readiness. "Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect." (Matthew 24:44).
