Question

Is it a sin to drink alcohol?

Answer

This is a question where Christians have held genuinely different positions, and I want to give you the biblical picture rather than either a reflexive "no" or a legalistic "yes."

The Bible does not prohibit alcohol. Wine is described positively throughout Scripture — it gladdens the human heart (Psalm 104:15), Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding (John 2:1-11), and Paul instructs Timothy to "use a little wine for the sake of your stomach" (1 Timothy 5:23). The idea that the "wine" in the New Testament was always grape juice is not supported by the Greek word oinos, which consistently refers to fermented wine throughout Scripture.

What the Bible does prohibit is drunkenness. Ephesians 5:18 is clear: "Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit." Drunkenness is condemned consistently — it appears in lists of works of the flesh (Galatians 5:21), it disqualifies church leaders (1 Timothy 3:3, Titus 1:7), and it is associated throughout Scripture with loss of control and moral failure.

So the biblical position is: alcohol in moderation is not sinful; drunkenness is.

But there are other considerations. 1 Corinthians 8-10 establishes the principle of Christian liberty and the responsibility that comes with it. Paul is willing to give up what is lawful for him if it causes a weaker brother to stumble. Romans 14:21: "It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble." If someone is a recovering alcoholic, or from a background where your drinking would be a genuine stumbling block, love for that person is a reason to abstain.

Summary: drinking alcohol is not a sin. Drunkenness is a sin. And love for others sometimes calls for voluntary abstinence even from what is lawful.
