How do I know if I am truly saved?
Answer
This question troubles more Christians than you might think — and the fact that you are asking it is actually a healthy sign. The person who has never questioned their salvation is often the one who should be most concerned.
The Bible gives us real, testable evidence to look for. 1 John was written precisely for this purpose: "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life." (1 John 5:13). God wants you to have assurance — not arrogance, but genuine, grounded confidence.
Here are the markers John gives throughout his letter:
First, do you believe the right things about Jesus? 1 John 4:2 says the Spirit of God confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. Genuine saving faith holds to the biblical Jesus — fully God, fully man, who died for sin and rose again.
Second, do you have a genuine desire to obey God? 1 John 2:3-4: "By this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says 'I know him' but does not keep his commandments is a liar." This is not sinless perfection — it is the direction of your life. Does obedience to God matter to you? Do you grieve when you sin?
Third, do you love other Christians? 1 John 3:14: "We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers." A person who claims to know God but has no genuine love for God's people has something to examine.
Fourth, does the Spirit bear witness? Romans 8:16: "The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God." There is an internal testimony — a sense of God as Father, a drawing toward prayer and Scripture — that accompanies genuine regeneration.
If these markers are genuinely present in your life — even imperfectly — that is real evidence of real salvation. If they are entirely absent, that is worth taking seriously before God.
