Question

How do I deal with anxiety as a Christian?

Answer

Anxiety is one of the most widespread struggles in the modern world, and it does not bypass Christians. If you are dealing with it, you are not alone and you are not failing as a believer.

The Bible takes anxiety seriously. Philippians 4:6-7 is the most direct passage: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." This is not a command to pretend you are not anxious. It is a command to redirect your anxiety — to bring it to God in prayer rather than carrying it alone.

Notice the structure: instead of anxiety, prayer. Instead of worry, thanksgiving. The peace that comes is described as surpassing understanding — it is not the peace of having all your problems solved; it is a supernatural calm that guards you even in the middle of unresolved situations.

Jesus addressed anxiety directly in Matthew 6:25-

  1. His argument is essentially this: look at how God provides for birds and flowers — things of far less value than you. How much more will He care for His own children? The root of anxiety is often a failure to trust God's fatherly provision, and Jesus calls us to address that root.

1 Peter 5:7 gives a beautiful invitation: "Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you." The word "cast" is active and decisive — like throwing off a heavy load. And the reason you can do it is His personal care for you.

I also want to say this: anxiety can have physiological and neurological components that are not purely spiritual. Seeking help from a doctor or counsellor is not a lack of faith — it is stewardship of the body God gave you. For many people, the combination of spiritual disciplines, community, and professional support is the wisest path. God works through all of these.
