Question

Can a Christian be demon-possessed?

Answer

This is a question that generates more heat than the biblical data actually requires — and the answer, properly understood, should be a source of confidence rather than anxiety for the believer.

The short answer is no — a genuine, born-again believer cannot be demon-possessed in the sense of a demon inhabiting and controlling them. The reason is theological and is directly stated in Scripture. 1 Corinthians 6:19: "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you?" The believer's body is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. 1 John 4:4: "He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." The Spirit of God dwells in the believer; a demon cannot possess what is already occupied by God.

2 Corinthians 6:15 asks rhetorically: "What accord has Christ with Belial?" The implied answer is none. The idea of Christ and a demon simultaneously inhabiting and controlling the same person is incompatible with the biblical understanding of the Holy Spirit's indwelling.

This does not mean Christians are immune to satanic attack. Ephesians 6:10-18 explicitly calls believers to "put on the whole armour of God" to stand against the schemes of the devil — which assumes real, ongoing spiritual warfare. Peter warns that "the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." (1 Peter 5:8). Christians can be oppressed, harassed, tempted, and afflicted by demonic forces. But this is different from possession — the internal control and ownership that characterises possession in the New Testament accounts.

The distinction matters practically. A Christian who sins badly, struggles persistently, or is going through intense spiritual attack does not need an exorcism. They need repentance, the Word, prayer, and the community of the church. The enemy is real and active — but the believer who is in Christ is sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13), and no power can snatch them from the Father's hand (John 10:29).
