The Real Jesus: How to Know You Are Trusting, Believing, and Having Faith in the Right Jesus Christ from the Bible

We live in an age of religious tolerance, spiritual pluralism, and theological confusion. Every cult, every world religion, and every distorted version of Christianity offers a version of "jesus." But the Apostle Paul issued a chilling warning: "For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed... you put up with it readily enough" (2 Corinthians 11:4).

The stakes could not be higher. Jesus Himself warned of a day when many would say, "Lord, Lord," and He would respond, "I never knew you" (Matthew 7:21-23). How do you avoid that terrifying reality? You must know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you are trusting, believing, and having faith in the Right Jesus Christ—the exact Jesus presented in the pages of Scripture.

This is not about being "spiritual." It is about being biblical. Let us open the Word and examine the unchanging, unassailable portrait of the Right Jesus Christ.

1. The Right Jesus Christ is the Eternal, Uncreated God

The first and most essential test of your faith is this: Who do you say that Jesus is? Many people admire Jesus. They see Him as a wise sage, a great moral teacher, or a revolutionary prophet. But the Right Jesus Christ is infinitely more.

The Bible opens with a staggering claim: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made" (John 1:1-3).

If you are trusting in a Jesus who is a created being—no matter how exalted—you are not trusting the Jesus of the Bible. The Right Jesus Christ is the Creator, not a creature. He is the "I AM" who confronted Moses in the burning bush (Exodus 3:14; John 8:58). When Thomas fell at His feet and cried out, "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:28), Jesus did not correct him; He commended his faith.

Faith in the right Jesus Christ begins with the confession that this carpenter from Nazareth is God incarnate, the second Person of the Trinity, eternally existent and worthy of all worship.

2. The Right Jesus Christ is the Promised Messiah of the Old Testament

To know if you are believing in the Right Jesus Christ, you must see if He matches the prophetic portrait painted by the Hebrew Scriptures. The entire Old Testament is a hallway of portraits pointing to one man.

The prophet Isaiah, writing 700 years before Christ, gave us a detailed sketch:

  • His Birth: "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel" (Isaiah 7:14). The Right Jesus Christ was born of a virgin, fulfilling the prophecy that God would dwell with us ("Immanuel").

  • His Nature: "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6). Notice the title: Mighty God. The baby in the manger was fully God.

  • His Suffering: Isaiah 53 paints the picture of the Suffering Servant. "He was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5).

The Right Jesus Christ is not a new invention of the New Testament. He is the fulfillment of every prophecy, the substance of every shadow, and the "Yes" to every promise of God (2 Corinthians 1:20). If your Jesus is disconnected from the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, you have the wrong Jesus.

3. The Right Jesus Christ is the Virgin-Born, Sinless Substitute

Your salvation depends entirely on the nature of the One you trust. If Jesus was born with a sinful nature like the rest of humanity, He could not save anyone. He would need a savior Himself.

But the Bible declares that the Right Jesus Christ is the spotless Lamb of God.

  • The angel announced to Mary: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you... therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God" (Luke 1:35). His conception was supernatural, bypassing the transmission of Adam's sin.

  • The writer of Hebrews states: "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin" (Hebrews 4:15).

If you are having faith in the right Jesus Christ, you are trusting in a Savior who lived a perfect life under the Law of God—a life He credits to your account (imputed righteousness). You are trusting in a High Priest who is holy, innocent, unstained, and separated from sinners (Hebrews 7:26).

4. The Right Jesus Christ Died a Substitutionary, Atoning Death

This is the heart of the gospel. Every world religion teaches that you must do something to reach God. But the Right Jesus Christ is the God who came down to do for you what you could never do for yourself.

Jesus Himself defined His mission: "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45). The word "ransom" implies a payment. Your sin incurred a debt you could not pay. The Right Jesus Christ paid it with His own blood.

The Apostle Peter explains: "He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed" (1 Peter 2:24).

Trusting in the right Jesus Christ means believing that His death was not just a tragic martyrdom or a noble example of love. It was a substitutionary atonement. He took your place. He absorbed the wrath of God that you deserved. If you believe your good works contribute to your salvation, or that Jesus merely "showed us the way," you are not trusting the Right Jesus Christ of the Bible. The biblical Jesus is the sole, sufficient sacrifice.

5. The Right Jesus Christ Physically Rose from the Dead

The bodily resurrection is the non-negotiable cornerstone of the Christian faith. Without it, your faith is worthless.

Paul is brutally direct: "And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins" (1 Corinthians 15:17).

Faith in the right Jesus Christ is faith in a living Savior. The tomb was empty. He appeared to Mary, to Peter, to the disciples on the road to Emmaus, and to more than 500 brothers at one time (1 Corinthians 15:3-8). He ate fish with them and told Thomas to touch His wounds.

The Right Jesus Christ is not a disembodied spirit or a memory in a history book. He is the firstfruits of the resurrection, guaranteeing that all who trust in Him will also be raised. As Paul writes in Romans 10:9, "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."

6. The Right Jesus Christ is the Only Mediator and the Only Way

In a culture that celebrates inclusivity, the claims of the Right Jesus Christ are exclusive and absolute. This is the ultimate test of whether you are believing in the right Jesus Christ: Do you believe He is the only way?

Jesus said plainly: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6).

The Apostle Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, declared before the religious leaders: "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).

If you are trusting in a Jesus who is "a way" among many ways, or a Jesus who is just one of many spiritual masters, you are trusting in a false Jesus. The Right Jesus Christ is the unique, singular, exclusive Mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5). He does not lead you to multiple paths up the mountain; He claims to be the mountain.

7. The Right Jesus Christ is Returning as King and Judge

The Jesus of the Bible has a future. He is not sitting idly in heaven waiting for history to end. He is actively reigning, and He is coming back.

The angels at His ascension promised: "This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven" (Acts 1:11).

The book of Revelation gives us the final portrait of the Right Jesus Christ"Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him" (Revelation 1:7). He will come as the righteous Judge (2 Timothy 4:1).

Having faith in the right Jesus Christ means living in eager expectation of His return. It means loving His appearing (2 Timothy 4:8). If your faith is only concerned with earthly happiness and temporal blessings, you are missing the eschatological hope that defines biblical Christianity. The Right Jesus Christ is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end (Revelation 22:13).

8. The Evidence of Faith: Love, Obedience, and the Spirit's Witness

How do you know that you know Him? The Bible gives you a feedback loop to confirm that your faith is genuine.

First, love for the brethren"We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers" (1 John 3:14). The Right Jesus Christ creates a family. If you have no love for God's people, you have no reason to believe you know God.

Second, obedience to His commands"And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says 'I know him' but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him" (1 John 2:3-4). This is not sinless perfection, but a pattern of life that seeks to honor Him.

Third, the witness of the Spirit"The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God" (Romans 8:16). When you read the Word and pray, the Holy Spirit confirms the truth of the gospel in your heart, producing a deep, abiding assurance.

Conclusion: Are You Trusting the Real Jesus?

The question, "How do I know I am trusting, believing, and having faith in the Right Jesus Christ?" is the most important question you will ever answer.

Do not rest your soul on a vague hope or a cultural Christianity. Open your Bible. Look at the Jesus revealed there:

  • The Eternal God.

  • The Promised Messiah.

  • The Virgin-Born Son.

  • The Substitutionary Sacrifice.

  • The Risen Lord.

  • The Only Mediator.

  • The Returning King.

If the Jesus you trust matches this biblical portrait—if you are resting in His finished work alone, and if your life is bearing the fruit of love and obedience—then you can have full assurance.

But if you find a discrepancy, run to the real Jesus today. He is "the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8). He welcomes all who come to Him in faith.

"These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life" (1 John 5:13).
